Jefferson takes control early

Jefferson High wasted no time gaining revenge with a signature victory in its WIAA Division 3 football playoff opener.


The Rock Valley North co-champions scored four touchdowns on their first 10 offensive plays Tuesday night and led 35-0 in the first minute of the second quarter as they rolled over visiting Madison Edgewood, 49-20.


Jefferson (9-1), which lost 28-19 to Edgewood in last year's playoff opener, moves on to a second-round game Saturday against Mount Horeb/Barneveld.


Pete Linse scored four toucdowns in leading the Eagles' charge past Edgewood (5-5). The senior standout rushed 16 times overall for 167 of Jefferson's 369 yards on the ground.

-- Mount Horeb/Barneveld 18, McFarland 14—Danny Elver threw three touchdown passes, including the game-winner to Logan Johnson with 3:23 left in the fourth quarter.

(5-5) beat McFarland (8-2) for the second year in a row in the first round.


Elver also connected with Josh Slaney for a 42-yard scoring pass in the first quarter and to Johnson for a 6-yard touchdown pass in the third.


Alec Carr scored both of


McFarland's touchdowns on runs of 3 and 4 yards.

-- Union Grove 28, New Berlin West 25—Cody McClelland's 6-yard scoring run with six minutes remaining gave the Broncos the victory over the Vikings.


The Broncos held a 21-7 lead in the second quarter, but the Vikings scored three straight touchdowns, with Steven Vogel scoring on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter to put New Berlin West ahead 25-21 with nine minutes remaining.


The Broncos' Dan Vyvyan gained 212 yards on 24 carries, including touchdown runs of 48 and 66 yards in the first quarter to give Union Grove a 14-0 lead.


Union Grove (6-4) will travel to Wisconsin Lutheran (8-2) on Saturday for a Level 2 game.
