— One person has died after a Sunday afternoon crash in Orfordville.

An Orfordville couple was stopped at the stop sign at the intersection of highways 11 and 213 at 1:42 p.m. Sunday, Sgt. Kerry Schlittler said. The couple proceeded into the intersection when they were struck by a large commercial truck driven by Kevin Campbell, 27, of Washington, Penn., according to a news release from the Rock County Sheriff's Office.

The truck was driving east on Highway 11 and failed to stop at the sign. Tire marks indicate the brakes were locked up before the 1997 International truck entered the intersection and until the truck struck the 1997 Mercury Mountaineer, according to the release.

The couple in the sport-utility vehicle were transferred to Mercy Hospital, Janesville, with serious injuries. The driver was flown to University Hospital, Madison, where he or she died, the release said.

The names of the two will be released today after family members are notified, according to the news release.

Highway 11 was closed for more than two hours while emergency responders cleared the scene. Orfordville EMS and the Wisconsin State Patrol assisted.

Campbell and his passenger were uninjured, Schlittler said.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor, but speed and inattentive driving could have been factors, according to the news release.

This is for you winterstinks. How many people that don't drive trucks run stop signs and stop lights. Go to hwy 14 & 26 and you will see it every time the light turns red people run the red light. So don't come down on us truck drivers because that driver ran a stop sign. I know the person who was killed and my prayers go out to his family. Don't come down on us truck drivers because one of us made a terrible mistake and took a persons life, but there are a lot of people that drive4 wheelers that run stop signs and red lights.

How horrible. Someone driving a truck should be even more careful.

I do understand the drive defensive case but please remember to be sensative here. Family members do read articles too.

I drove over the rumble strips today (3 of them) and they are shot. I went over them in a pick up and you would hardly know they were there. The county needs to repair them. Don't get me wrong folks, the red flashing light is still there and there is no excuse for the driver to run the stop sign. I know the deceased and my prayers go out to his family.
Just a thought, when you come up to a stop sign or a red light, PLEASE DO NOT ASSUME THE VEHICLE WILL STOP. ALWAYS ASSUME THE VEHICLE WILL NOT STOP, THIS IS CALLED DEFENSIVE DRIVING.

Napalm is right. I think Hwy 14 & Kennedy Rd. is the worst intersection for people blowing through red lights.

Not only is there red flashing lights, there is rumble strips on the road alerting people to slow down. That is a horrible intersection. My mom and I were almost killed by someone who ran the stop sign on hwy 11. He never slowed down at all. I think the speed limit needs to be lowered. Its 55 right up until the stop sign on hwy 11 both directions. My sympathies to the family.

This is why you drive defensively. Never assume the vehicle approaching an intersection is going to stop. I see people blow the red lights on 14 and Kennedy 1-2 times a week. I slow down at the green light at that intersection and I to see if traffic is stopping when they get a red before I go.

Wow. Maybe the driver of the truck should have slowed down. I believe there are even flashing red lights along with the stop signs there.
