Kyle Poplar’s 1-yard run gave Lake Geneva Badger a 34-28 victory in double-overtime over previously unbeaten Waterford for a thrilling end Wednesday to the Southern Lakes football season.


Badger High finished 5-2 in the conference, tied with Union Grove for second place, one behind champion Waterford (8-1, 6-1).


The Badgers rebounded from a 21-0 halftime deficit to it 21-21 in regulation. Poplar’s 1- and 13-yard second-half touchdown runs cut the deficit to 12-14. John Leibforth scored on a 6-yard run, and Nick Stilp’s extra-point kick put the game into the first overtime.

Union Grove 28, Burlington 24—The Broncos held off a late Burlington rally to win a Southern Lakes finale.


Union Grove had 322 yards rushing and led 21-6 at half.


The Broncos’ victory gave them a second-place tie with Lake Geneva Badger at 5-2 and deprived Burlington (3-4) of a chance to make the WIAA playoffs in its first Southern Lakes season since 1996.

The Panthers finished 3-4 in the Southern Lakes and 5-4 overall after being winless last season. Westosha finished 1-6 and 3-6.
