Absenteeism up as students show flu-like symptoms
Podcast Episode
The flu is the suspected cause of higher absenteeism in Janesville schools on Monday. Kyle Geissler reports.
More students in the Janesville School District are staying home sick this week.
Janesville School District Manager of Health Services Matt Haeger says six schools are reporting absenteeism over 10 percent. Those schools are Adams Elementary School, Roosevelt Elementary School, Van Buren Elementary School, Edison Middle School, Marshall Middle School, and Craig High School, but Haeger says other schools are also very close to 10 percent.
Haeger says they are implementing some measures in response to the illnesses. They are putting a mask on any student showing flu-like symptoms while they wait to be taken home from school and they are asking parents to report their child's symptoms when calling the district's absentee reporting phone.
Haeger says they cannot confirm the illness is H1N1, but the CDC says the seasonal flu is not here yet.
