— Day one of the girls WIAA state individual tennis tournament brought mixed results for area entrants.

Edgerton High senior Marie Stettler and Walworth Big Foot/Williams Bay senior Julie Kolnik won Division 2 first-round singles matches, but there were no winners in singles or doubles from the area in Division 1.

Janesville Craig’s doubles team of Hailey Smith and Taylor Storbakken, despite being one point away from winning the first set, could not hang on and lost 7-5, 6-2 to Waukesha South’s Karlie Laveau and Erica Van Riper. The Cougars’ doubles team of Olivia Ehlers and Emily Reshower also bowed out in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, to Franklin sophomores Elizabeth Brandes and Liv Lapome.

“Hailey and Taylor looked good early on, and actually were leading 40-15 and serving for the first set,” Craig coach Camilla Owen said. “But a couple of miss-hits hurt them, and they couldn’t battle back in set two.

“Emily and Olivia made it to state as seniors, and that’s something to remember.”

Janesville Parker’s doubles team of Maddie Theisen and Kristin Zeilinger also lost in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, to Appleton West seniors Hannah VonBehren and Jessie Hietpas.

“They ran into a seeded team but played them tough,” Parker coach Justin Long said of his two sophomores. “A lot of games went to deuce, and I think they learned a lot about what it takes to play at state and what they need to work on now before next season.”

Kolnik, a senior, improved to 21-12 with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Brianna Madson of Racine Prairie. Next up for Kolnik is Samantha Pallini (20-8) of Green Bay Notre Dame at noon today.

Stettler advanced with a 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 thriller over Lucy Bartlett of Milwaukee University School. The Crimson Tide standout (19-5) plays Maria Koval (14-6) of Green Bay Notre Dame at noon today.

East Troy seniors Paige Klumb and Taryn Knudsen lost to an opening-round doubles match to Kenosha St. Joseph freshmen Alaina Anderson and Megan Irving, 7-5, 7-6, in Division 2. Whitewater’s Sabrina Bowey and Lauren Briggs also lost in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, to Altoona seniors Lindsey Sletner and Samantha Preston.

Big Foot/Williams Bay juniors Heather Grosso and Maggie Lauterbach lost in straight sets to Carissa Wallerich and Sara Vach of La Crosse Aquinas, 6-4, 7-5.
