A good state golf tournament for the Parker and Edgerton teams

RSS

— Edgerton senior Alyssa Ferrell has spent her high school years chasing an individual girls golf state championship.

As it turned out, Ferrell’s pursuit of the elusive WIAA title fell just short.

But as Ferrell left University Ridge here late Tuesday, she

wasn’t the least bit disappointed.

Ferrell settled for settled for third place in her quest for the individual championship. But the Crimson Tide—making its first-ever trip to the state tournament as a team—had a stellar showing and captured second place in Division 2.

“Having the team finish second is so exciting,” Ferrell said. “For me personally, I guess it just wasn’t meant to be. But having the team play so well is really great.”

Madison Edgewood won its record seventh straight Division 2 title and ninth straight championship overall, posting a 628 score. Edgerton was a distant second at 738, while Hayward was third at 746.

“This is something else,” said Steve Zartman, Edgerton’s first year coach. “We knew what we had coming in, and we set some pretty high goals. Then the girls went and followed through on them.”

In Division 1, Milton’s Ashton Stair began the day in a tie for the lead, but she shot an 83 and slipped into a tie for fifth (158). Waukesha’s Emily Joers won the tournament with a 150 and is believed to be the first freshman ever to win the Division 1 individual title.

Stair struggled through a brutal front nine in which she shot an 8-over par 44. The downfall for Stair came on the par-5 16th hole when she made a quadruple bogey.

Stair tried getting some momentum back when she birdied the par-5 second hole. But she made four straight bogeys after that, taking her out of title contention.

Janesville Parker wrapped up the best year in program history by finishing eighth in the Division 1 team competition. The Vikings, making their first trip to state, shot a 726, 43 strokes behind first-time champion Middleton.

Parker’s final day was highlighted by solid 85s from seniors Katie Brossard and Molly Rozeboom. Junior Amanda Becker also had a strong day, carding an 89.

“It was a fitting way for those two to end their careers,” Parker coach John Zimmerman said of Brossard and Rozeboom. “They meant so much to our program, and to finish out by playing at state is something they’ll never forget.

“And I’m really proud of the whole team. We lost one dual meet all season, and that was to Middleton, which won the state title. That’s a great season for Parker golf.”

As for Division 2, Ferrell was Edgerton’s leader throughout. The Michigan State University recruit entered the day in a tie for third place, but never could mount a major challenge.

Ferrell shot her second straight 75 and finished at 6-over-par 150 for 36 holes. That was four shots back of Osceola freshman Casey Danielson and two behind Madison Edgewood’s Meghan Martine.

“She can’t be disappointed,” Zartman said of Ferrell. “I’m not sure if people realize just how difficult it is to win a state title.”

Ferrell played a solid, steady round that included one birdie—a 15-foot putt at the par-3 eighth hole—and four bogeys. But when Danielson refused to blink and Martine posted the low round of the day (71), Ferrell settled for third.

For her career, Ferrell finished with two third-place finishes and two fourths in four appearances at state.

“Just getting here four times is a great accomplishment itself,” Ferrell said. “It would have been great to win one, but I had a good career.”

Edgerton freshman Brooke Ferrell, Allyssa’s sister, also had a terrific performance with a second-day 76. That lifted Brooke into sole possession of fifth place at 157 and was big in the Crimson Tide’s drive to the runner-up spot in team scoring.

Junior Emma Stolen shot a 106 for Edgerton, while sophomore teammate Megan Dorn had her score (114) count for the first time all year.

“Our No. 5 (Dorn) really came through, and no one expected that,” Zartman said. “Overall, I couldn’t be more proud of these girls. They handled this week about as well as it could be handled.”
