Rattlers roll in WCC playoff opener

— Top-seeded UW-Rock County blanked visiting UW-Waukesha, 2-0, to advance to the Wisconsin Collegiate Conference soccer tournament semifinals Wednesday at UW-Rock.

“It was a good win to start the playoffs,” Rattlers coach Grant McNall said.

The Rattlers dominated play, keeping the ball in Waukesha’s end most of the game.

“We were there pretty much all night,” McNall said. “We took 12 corner kicks.’’

Janesville Craig graduate James Baines gave the Rattlers a 1-0 lead on a corner kick 35 minutes into the game.

Tanner Harrie added an insurance goal at the 79-minute mark with an assist from Mike Bier.

“In the second half, Waukesha got a few more looks, but we controlled the flow,” McNall said.

The Rattlers host UW-Baraboo or UW-Washington on Wednesday in the semifinals. If the Rattlers win, they’ll the WCC title game at 1 p.m. Saturday.

UW-Rock, the regular-season WCC co-champion, improved to 9-2-2. UW-Waukesha finished 0-7.
