Janesville Parker High School’s No. 1 doubles team will join the action in this week’s WIAA girls state individual tennis tournament.

Maddie Theisen and Kristin Zeilinger, both Parker sophomores, have been selected as extra qualifiers to represent the Lake Geneva Badger Sectional in Division 1. They’ll take a 14-10 record against Appleton West seniors Hannah VonBehren and Jessie Hietpas (18-7) at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.

Under the WIAA guidelines, each of the state’s eight Division 1 sectionals is allowed one automatic extra qualifier. Theisen and Zeilinger were selected from the Badger Sectional on the basis their overall performances throughout the season against the other contenders, even though they lost in the subsectional qualifying matches.

Beyond the automatic selections, there are eight other at-large extra qualifiers in singles and eight in doubles in Division 1 from across state, but the Badger Sectional produced no others in doubles. Monroe junior Kristin McArdle was picked in singles.

The Whitewater team of senior Sabrina Bowey and junior Lauren Briggs comes out of the Whitewater Sectional as an extra qualifier in Division 2 doubles.

Theisen and Zeilinger will be joined in Division 1 doubles by two Janesville Craig teams. The Cougars will be represented by senior Hailey Smith and junior Taylor Storbakken (22-3) and seniors Olivia Ehlers and Emily Reshower (15-9), who earned automatic berths Flights 1 and 2 doubles at the Badger Sectional.

Smith and Storbakken face Waukesha South juniors Karlie Laveaua and Erica Van Riper (19-9) at 5 p.m. Thursday. Ehlers and Reshower go against Franklin sophomores Elizabeth Brandes and Liv Lampone (13-5) at 3:30, and the Craig team would face Theisen and Zeilinger in the second round at 9:30 a.m. Friday.

The tournament runs through Saturday in both divisions.
