— Big Foot High School senior running back Michael Walker said he felt run down most of the week.

Brodhead/Juda’s football team came down with the same symptoms.

Walker shook off his week-long bug and rolled up 150 yards on 27 carries and two touchdowns to lead fifth-ranked Walworth Big Foot to a dominating 30-0 victory over sixth- ranked Brodhead/Juda here Friday night.

By winning its 26th straight regular-season game, Big Foot (7-0, 5-0) seized sole possession of first place in the Rock Valley South, one game ahead of Brodhead/Juda (6-1, 4-1).

“I preached to them (the Chiefs) that the last two games, I thought we lost focus a little bit, and I told them that if all our guys are doing their job, we’re a pretty formidable team,” Big Foot coach Rodney Wedig said.

Formidable may be an understatement in the estimation of Brodhead/Juda coach Jim Matthys.

“I said it before, and I’ll say it again, I still think in a lot of ways they may be a little better than last year,” Matthys said of the Chiefs, who were 13-1 and WIAA Division 4 state runners-up last season. “They don’t have that one guy, and they really spread the ball around and have a nice game plan.”

Walker was the Chiefs’ “game plan” early in this game. The talented runner carried all six plays of the Chiefs’ 77-yard scoring drive, capped by his 7-yard touchdown run that put Big Foot up, 7-0. early in the game.

“The hype of the game helped me after being sick all week,” Walker said. “One of my linebackers has mononucleosis, and I’m pretty close to him, and I didn’t know if I had it.”

Both teams’ defenses looked healthy for most of the first half, leaving the Cardinals content with running out the second-quarter clock.

A botched Brodhead/Juda snap resulted in a Brandon Sovsky fumble recovery for Big Foot at the Cardinal 20 with just :31 left in the first half.

Two plays later, Chiefs quarterback Steve Dowden floated a 20-yard touchdown pass to Alec McGreevy to put Big Foot in control 14-0.

Walker took over where he left off in the third with a 6-yard touchdown run.

Big Foot made it 23-0 when Garrett Cary tackled a Brodhead runner in the end zone for a safety with one second left in the third quarter.

Dowden put the finishing touches on the victory with a 32-yard TD pass to McGreevy .

“This win means a lot,” Walker said. “That pretty much shows the rest of the state that we’re not just a pushover team and we are who we are.”

This is a no brainer what game to give more coverage to, (2) 0-6 teams or (2) 6-0 teams ranked 1st and 3rd in the state in the coaches poll. I would be willing to bet Big Foot could either of those 0-6 teams a game, not saying they would win, but give them a hell of a game. Good job Gazette on your Rock Valley coverage!!!
