Janesville Craig High School will double its pleasure in the girls WIAA individual state tennis tournament next week at the Nielsen Stadium in Madison.

Advancing to state for the Cougars are Hailey Smith and Taylor Storbakken in the First Flight doubles, along with Olivia Ehlers and Emily Reshower, who won the Second Flight championship Wednesday in the Lake Geneva Badger Sectional.

Smith-Storbakken improved to 22-3 after winning their first two matches before falling in the title match. Ehlers-Reshower moved to 15-9 after winning their two matches.

Craig juniors Ciarra Sroda and Minaliza Shahlapour won the Third Flight doubles title, and junior Maggie Bolton finished third in Third Flight singles to lift Craig to second place in the sectional.

Fort Atkinson won the sectional title with a 39-33 edge over Craig to qualify for the state team tournament.

However, Fort Atkinson senior Leah Dahl, the defending sectional champion, lost to Burlington’s Stephanie Londre, 7-6 (1), 6-0, in the title match.

Dahl returns to the individual state tournament, though, as Flight 1 sectional runner-up. Olivia Hartwick of the Blackhawls also advanced as the Flight 2 singles champion. Teammates Lexie Weigand and Ellen Ringle won Flight 3 and 4 singles titles.

And along with the Blackhawks, Craig celebrated a strong team effort.

“Everyone got into the mix. We scored points in six of the seven matches,” Craig coach Camilla Owen said. “It really was a team effort, and a lot of fun.’’

Janesville Parker did not have a state qualifier.

Only the top four in Flight 1 singles and doubles and the Flight 2 champions advance to the individual state tournament, which is Oct. 15-17.
