Dahl, Fort aim for state

Fort Atkinson High School’s Badger Conference co-champions will be well reprsented Wednesday in WIAA Division 1 girls sectional tennis at Lake Geneva Badger.

Typical of the way they dominated the conference meet, the Blackhawks swept through the Watertown Subsectional on Monday by advancing all four of their singles players and their No. 1 doubles team.

Leah Dahl, the two-time Badger champion at No. 1 singles, again led the Fort Atkinson charge. The top-seeded and unbeaten senior, the defending sectional champion, began her bid for a return trip to state with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout in the Flight 1 subsectional qualifying round.

Fort Atkinson took subsectional team honors with 22 points, and that total will carry over to the sectional in determining who advances to the state team tournament.

Qualifiers from the Watertown Subsectional will join those from today’s Burlington Subsectional in the Badger Sectional. The top four sectional finishers in Flight 1 singles and doubles, along with the Flight 2 champions, will advance to the state tournament.

The same is true in Division 2, where area schools competed Monday in the Edgewood Subsectional at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison. Edgewood and McFarland led the way with 24 and 20 points, respectively, in action leading to the Whitewater Sectional, also on Wednesday.
