JANESVILLE The annual Big Eight Conference girls swim meet between cross-town rivals Janesville Craig and Janesville Parker was a big day for seniors.
Craig High posted a 110-60 victory Friday, winning 10 of 11 events for its third Big Eight dual win over Parker in the last four meetings.
The Cougars improved to 3-2-1 in the Big Eight, while Parker fell to 1-5.
Craig seniors Hailey Schneider and Betsy Collins left the Parker pool on a winning note, while Parker seniors Megan Olin, Leah Letson, Annie Jersild, Sammy Jackson and Erin Jensen had to tell the Vikings better luck next year.
Craig coach Brian Kitzman said his Cougars found a little extra in practice this week.
“They get psyched up for this meet,” Kitzman said, noting he has been working the Cougars hard. “It is a big deal, especially for the upper classmen.’’
Schneider won the 100 breastroke in 1:11.11 and the 100 butterfly in 1:00.63, while Collins won the 50 freestyle in 26.92 and the 100 freestyle in 1:01.09. Each swimmer participated on the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.
“This is an important meet for them,” Kitzman said of his two seniors. “The other girls know it, and they stepped up.’’
Craig junior Chole Gansen won the 100 backstroke in 1:07.11 and the 200 individual medley in 2:25.05. Teammate Emily Legreid won the 500 freestyle in 6:03.2, while Kali Schneider won the 200 freestyle in 2:11.53.
Hailey Schneider said she concentrated on practicing hard and kept her final Craig-Parker meet in the background, but she could feel her teammates’ excitement.
“We were just excited for the meet,” Hailey said. “It was more excitement to swim here, and this is our last meet against Parker.’’
Hailey Schneider will pointing toward earning her fourth appearance in the WIAA state meet next month. Collins is hoping to earn a state berth with Schneider in a relay.
Like Schneider and Collins, Parker’s Olin said the Vikings are caught up in hard mid-season practices.
“The week was kind of hard,” Olin said. “We were really excited to swim against Craig, and then we’re seniors and swimming our last meet against Craig. It was kind of nerve-wracking.’’
Olin combined with Sam Witek, Frankie Larson and Sara Gosline to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:52.58. Olin finished second in the 50 freestyle, while senior teammate Erin Jensen took second in the 100 butterfly.
Olin will concentrate on the remaining duals and focus on gaining her first state berth with a relay team and the freestyle sprints.
“These are my best times so far,” Olin said of her season. “I’m really excited.’’
