Rock County DNR Warden Boyd Richter says the overall numbers for the opening weekend of the traditional gun-deer hunting season were down more than 30%, and 43% for the antlerless kill, compared to last year.
Richter says warm weather, standing corn, and fog may have all played a factor in the low numbers. He also says the earn-a-buck program is not very popular. With Rock County in the Chronic Wasting Disease Zone, Richter hopes part of the reason for a low harvest is fewer deer.
As always, Richter reminds hunters to be careful.
