WCLO's Steve Benton reports lack of sponsorship may kill the annual 4th of July celebration in Janesville
JANESVILLE The city of Janesville may find out what it's like to go without a 4th of July fireworks display next summer.
The Wisconsin Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge 14 of Janesville, announced early this year they were taking over sponsorship of the annual celebration after the Jaycees dropped out. But things haven't worked out.
Noble Grand, Dale Stevenson says they're still in debt $10,000 from this summer and can't raise the money to start planning for 2010.
He says they formed an exploratory committee, which sent out 300 letters seeking pledges from local businesses, and got "a minimal response."
The city of Janesville has supported the local celebration in the past, but has never sponsored it. If a sponsor and money can't be found within the next three months, it will be very difficult to order the fireworks, and apply for the appropriate permits, to put on the annual event.
Stevenson says they sent letters to all Janesville city council members informing them of their decision.

You know the 4th celebrations held, are mostly aimed at beer drinking. Maybe this is the root of the problem.
