Craig’s Schneider earns extra berth
Janesville Craig senior Hailey Schneider will be doing double duty again in the girls WIAA Division 1 state swim meet.
After advancing as the 100-yard breaststroke champion with a 1:06.77 time in the Middleton Sectional on Saturday, Schneider became an extra qualifier Sunday in the 200 individual medley. She earned that spot with a second-place time of 2:10.01 in the sectional.
Sectional champions in all events earned automatic state berths. The extra qualifiers for Division 1 are the next 18 fastest (excluding sectional champions) in each event from sectionals across the state. Division 2 extra qualifiers are the next 12 fastest.
Schneider will be making her fourth appearance in the Division 1 meet, which has swim events scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium in Madison. She has qualified in two events each year, finishing third in the 200 individual medley and fifth in the 100 breaststroke last year.
Emily Russart, the two-time defending state champion in the 100 breaststroke for the Lake Geneva Badger/Walworth Big Foot/Williams Bay co-op program, also is on her way back to the Division 1 meet. She was the Kenosha Bradford Sectional champion in the breaststroke and became an extra qualifier in the individual medley with a second-place time of 2:09.9.
Overall, Badger/Big Foot/Williams Bay has eight individual or relay qualifiers. That includes five sectional champions and three extra qualifiers.
Milton leads the area for Division 2 competition, which has swim events set for 6:30 p.m. Friday at the UW Natatorium. The Red Hawks had four individual and one relay champions Saturday in winning the Cudahy Sectional team title, and they have added five extra qualifiers.
Jennah Haney, a Milton senior, will return as an extra qualifier in the 100 breaststroke after winning the state title as a freshman and sophomore and finishing second last year. She finished second to Delavan-Darien senior Emily McClellan in that event in Saturday’s sectional and won the 200 individual medley over McClellan, who has became an extra qualifier in that event.
Elkhorn, the sectional team runner-up to Milton, has nine state qualifiers. The Elks have added six extras to their three sectional champions.
