— Veterinary technician Janet Pezzi spoke softly to Snickers and stroked her fluffy, white fur as veterinarian Kevin Kreier examined the domestic long-hair calico cat.

“Ohhhhh, you did very good,” Pezzi cooed to 13-year-old Snickers.

Even though the exam was being done in Snicker’s Milton home, she briefly hissed and growled.

“I’m going to look down the hatch,” Kreier said before giving Snickers an oral exam, checking her abdomen, testing range of motion in her limbs and looking for fleas.

“Did her tests turn out all right?” Snickers’ owner, Margaret Sayre, asked.

“Her lab work was OK,” Kreier said, “but we decided she needed to get her vaccines updated.’’

Two weeks earlier, Sayre’s daughter, who was in town for a visit, took Snickers to Badger Veterinary Hospital, 3113 E. McCormick Drive, Janesville. Snickers had been drinking and urinating excessively, and they wanted to make sure she wasn’t diabetic or suffering from any other health problems. Snickers had lab work and a routine exam.

Later, after her daughter was gone, Sayre, 97, decided to take advantage of the hospital’s house call service, which was first offered in the spring.

It would have been too taxing for Sayre to get Snickers into a pet carrier and even harder for her to lift and carry the cat and carrier to the car, she said.

Kreier said people who could benefit from the house calls service include those who don’t drive, who have multiple pets that are hard to transport or who prefer to have their pet euthanized in the privacy of their home.

“It’s just too difficult to come in. So we go out to their houses,’’ Pezzi said.

“It’s a nice way to provide for the community,’’ Kreier said.

The initial response to house calls was slow, but interest has picked up, Pezzi said.

“News of it just might be getting out there,’’ she said.

Kreier said there is a need for the service.

“We do have a lot of clients who are elderly, handicapped and with multiple pets,” Pezzi agreed.

Kreier and Pezzi said other mobile veterinarians in the area work out of their trucks, but no other Rock County veterinary practice makes house calls, they said.

The house call fee depends on how far staff has to travel. The service is offered throughout Rock County and beyond, Kreier said.

House calls in the Janesville/Milton area cost $55.45 plus additional services, such as vaccinations, Pezzi said.

Sayre’s bill totaled $105, which she said was well worth paying for the convenience.

“She loves me. I love her,” Sayre said about Snickers. “It’s so important to have her healthy.”

I have used Visiting Vet several times, and heartily recommend them. Their mobile unit was extremely well equiped, and clean. One of my dogs had surgery in their mobile unit. They also can do labs and xrays.

When we farmed near Milton, I used Schambow mobile vet for quite a few years also. Good service at a reasonable cost.

Badger Vet.....wouldn't recommend them.

One of the vets from Blackhawk came to my friend's home to euthanize her dog a few years ago. Also, I think at least some of the vets that make house calls, be it in a truck or other type of vehicle, are working out of a clinic somewhere and they are obviously going to travel in some sort of vehicle and work out of it. Vets have been traveling to farms to treat animals for decades.
It's a nice human-interest story, but it seems that from a technical standpoint, it wasn't researched or perhaps presented all that well and is kind of confusing concerning the facts of what is actually available from area vets. I'm glad to see a story like this and to know that it is becoming more of a trend for vets to offer this service, but I don't believe that Badger is exclusive in doing so.

booch11 - The article is stating that Badger Veterinary Hospital is the first in the area to be a FULL clinic that offers house calls, not just one that operates out of a truck.

People appreciate having their companion cared for right in the comforts of their own home, where their pet feels at ease. It's a great service to offer, both for the pet owners and the pets.

In case anyone should every want or need cremation service for their pet, Madison Road Clinic in Beloit has a crematory. They price according to size and provide a plain plastic, but decent urn in the price. Not sure if it is still operating, but there was a pet crematory called "Remembrance Pet Crematory" in the country by Elkhorn, also. We've used both when we had to lose a pet in the middle of winter and couldn't bury them.

a good point has been made concerning euthanasia. after you have had a pet for years and now the pets suffering outweighs keeping him/her alive any longer, it is difficult and embarrassing (shed the tears) to take your pet to the office. usually the procedure at the vet is done late in the day (i think because of the emotions; it is a bummer for the doctors and staff as well) it is agonizing to prepare yourself for the eventual and inevitable outcome. done at home, it makes allot of sense.

mjbike2 - I use Prarie Animal Hospital - it's right by Shopko on Prarie in Beloit. They were fantastic with my cat and really helpful and answered all my questions. I would recommend them!

This makes a lot of sense for euthanizations especially. The most awful part is taking your pet in for an exam only to find that they are too sick to be saved.

I've known Rick Shambow (Milton Mobile Vet) for years, very honest down to earth vet. He's not out to get your money and make your pets undergo unnecesary testing, etc. He will diagnose your pet with his best honest opinion. I've had him put a few of my pets down over the years for various reasons and I always feel like I made the best decision. 608-743-1473

True, we all have our favorites. For those that are not able to leave their homes, but have a great quality of life by having pets, this is a great concept!

Yet, for me, having a vet for my dog is just as important as finding the right doctor for me. I have to trust the doctor with my health. Just as I have to be able to trust the vet for my dog. I go to the Milton Vet Clinic, and I live in the Job Center area, because I've known Doc Trevor for over 20 years. I feel comfortable that he will take good care of my dog because I know how he cares for his own. Plus, I have dog sat his dogs and his parents'. He also knows how my family has been with dogs. To me, that is the most important.... trust.

I've heard nothing but great things about this veterinarian. I've also considered giving his place a call. I've got a cat that freaks out so badly at the animal clinic that she has to be sedated. The last time this happened, she either got a little too much of the sedative or had a bad reaction; she ended up on the ventilator for the afternoon. Poor, kitty.

We use Mt Zion animal clinic, they have been very very helpful. We adopted a bulldog with many problems and they knew exactly what to do for her. We also had an English Mastiff that we had to have put down last spring, he was almost 200lbs. My husband took him in and they allowed him privacy with the dog for almost 2 hours and took care of the aftercare for a very large animal at minimal cost. They helped us through a very difficult time and didnt turn our pockets inside out.

They're not cheap, but, they are reasonable.
I have an 8 year old Miniature Pinscher. She's been going there since she was 6 month's old.
The staff is very easy to work with, too.

There is a woman vet from the Evansville area that comes to your home in an RV that is equipped like a clinic on wheels. Her name is Dr. Christine Severin, “The Visiting Vet”, 608-862-1100. She has taken care of our pets for several years now and we think she’s great.
I would definitely consider her service a “house call” and I appreciate the fact that she can examine and treat pets on an examining table, rather than a table in my house with a towel on it.

We use Evansville Vet service. Dr Kenny is great ! They have done house calls for us too when we had to have our 2 dogs put down.I am not sure how many house calls they do on a regular basis, usually it is mostly for large animal/farm calls, but they will do small animals too. We usually try to schedual the vet to come out for the horses or other large animals then add in the barn cats and the dogs vaccinations at the same time. Saves us a trip and extra costs.

This is a wonderful service. My vet made a house call for me when I put my beloved dog to sleep last summer. My dog really hated going to the vet, and the thought of dragging him there, where he hated it, and then have that be his last moments was a terrible thought for me. I just happend to ask my vet if he did house calls and he said yes, but we don't "advertise" that. I was so relieved to have him come to my home. I'm glad to see more vets are willing to do the same. The little extra cost was of no matter to me, I would have paid double! Pet are special members of the family too.
