Edgewood earns tennis title

Madison Edgewood grabbed top honors, but area schools also came through the Whitewater Sectional with state qualifiers in WIAA Division 2 boys tennis.

Edgewood finished Thursday’s action with 50 points to win the sectional title and gain a berth in the state team tournament. The Crusaders also advanced Flight 1 singles champion Jack Cullen and two doubles teams to the individual state tournament.

Delavan-Darien produced two individual qualifiers. J.J. Collins advanced by placing third in Flight 1 singles, and teammate Travis Murphy qualified as the Flight 2 singles champion.

Edgerton’s doubles team of Ben Fuder and Chad Prater qualified for state as third-place finishers in Flight 1. They lost 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinals to Edgewood’s Aaron Papenthien and Patrick Lagman, the eventual sectional champions.

Meanwhile, in the Division 1 sectional at Lake Geneva Badger, which was played mostly on Wednesday and completed Thursday, Kenosha Tremper locked up top honors 48 points.

Contrary to what was reported Thursday, Milton twins Taylor and Tyler Banh will advance to state as third-place finishers in Flight 1 doubles at the Badger Sectional, not as champions.

They earned their qualifying spot with a quarterfinal win, then lost 7-6 (7), 3-6, 7-5 in the semifinals to eventual runners-up Chris Besaw and Andy Bjerregaard of Racine Case, before winning the third-place match against Alex Chironis and Reid Solheim of Badger, 6-1, 7-6 (5).

Tomas Goldsmith and Conner Hildebrandt of Tremper won the Flight 1 doubles championship.

The individual state tournament for both divisions is next weekend. The team tournament is June 12-13, both at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.
