— The Janesville School District is getting into the concert-promoting business. For one concert, at least.

The school board approved the Wednesday, July 1, concert at its meeting Tuesday. Superintendent Karen Schulte said it’s an innovative way to raise money for district needs.

The fundraising goal is $20,000, which will establish a fund to help youths who are homeless or who have drug or alcohol problems.

Co-sponsoring the concert is Rock County Partners in Prevention.

District social worker Verlene Orr told the board that officials have identified youths who could benefit from drug treatment, but their families can’t afford it.

The district is once again calling on the resources of the Studer Group in this effort. Studer Group CEO Quint Studer has donated his company’s time and treasure to adapt his quality-improvement system in the Janesville public schools.

Studer’s work has included books on his management theories and, most recently, a CD with songs that promote those ideas titled “Passion and Purpose.”

Studer wrote lyrics and recruited two professionals, Alex Call and Lisa Carrie, to perform on the CD and at Studer seminars.

The duo will perform at the July 1 concert, with Studer once again footing the bill.

Call’s work may be most familiar. He wrote the 1980s hit “867-5309/Jenny” as well as “The Power of Love,” performed by Huey Lewis and the News.

Carrie also has professional chops. She has sung with country-pop artists Eddy Arnold, Mickey Gilley and Charlie Louvin. She sang with Wayne Newton in Las Vegas. She released an album of her own music in 2005, “In Another Life.”

Carrie and Call are married. They collaborated on “Passion and Purpose,” using Studer’s lyrics and drawing on musical influences such as 1970s Memphis soul and the Eagles, according to a news release.

The concert is titled “Time To Live.” The evening will feature a silent auction of luxury items, including spa packages, Badger/Packer tickets and travel vouchers.

Where was the Gazette last night? And over the last couple of months? I was at the Rylee Jo benefit concert last night at the Pontiac Convention Center. Phil Stacey from American Idol came to town to show his support and our local paper couldn't care less. Phil Stacey put on an AMAZING show! Loftland and another local band from Madison (Jekel something- sorry guys, forgot the rest of your name) opened for him. It would've been great if our town had supported Rylee Jo's family more. She is a four year old little girl who is recovering from E coli that has done major, and permanent damage to her body. Her family needs all the prayers and support that people are willing to give.

I saw them perform in Atlanta last year and they were very good! There must have been about 10 members in the band - this wasn't a cheap production. I would encourage all to attend. Not only will the music be good but you will be helping out a good cause as well.

Sincerely,
Bill Sodemann

Who wrote this article? The sarcasm is appreciated.

This is absolutely, positively ridiculous. Just holding the silent auction will draw more people. The music with lame lyrics will only draw people away.
