— Members of the Junior A hockey team this summer will pick up brushes along with their hockey sticks and paint the renovated ice rink to save the city $6,000.

The city council Tuesday OK'd spending $200,000 for repairs and remodeling at the city's aging facility to meet North American Hockey League requirements. The league will begin play this fall.

The league requires that teams have their own locker rooms and office, and Wisconsin Hockey Partners asked the council to make the improvements.

But the size of the rehab grew as other groups that use the ice rink lobbied for improvements. It ballooned further when a well-used party room removed from original drawings to make room for the team was added back in.

City staff thought bids could be as high as $320,000.

"We were pleasantly surprised," Mike Payne, engineering manager, said Wednesday.

The city received bids from seven companies, "which is a lot of interest. I think it is a very favorable bidding climate right now."

The council awarded the bid to Corporate Contractors of Beloit.

Items approved include:

-- A locker room for the Junior A hockey team.

-- Painting and reflooring the warming room.

-- A new party room created by enclosing an overhang at the end of the building.

-- Storage for city staff, other user groups and the Junior A hockey team.

-- A concession stand designated for beer sales.

-- An office for the Junior A hockey team manager.

The $200,000 includes:

-- $166,847—Base bid.

-- $2,500—Skate-resistant flooring the city will buy from a local supplier.

-- $2,000—Asbestos removal.

-- $2,000—Benches and paint in the Junior A hockey team locker room.

-- $5,400—Cabinets and counters in the youth hockey league concession stand.

-- $4,400—Heating system for an unheated bleacher section.

The remaining money will be a contingency fund.

To reduce the total to $200,000, the council deleted items, including cabinets and counters for the national hockey league concession stand, special shelving for rental skates and heating in existing locker rooms.

Also, about the liquor licensing in this town. It amazes me as to how quick, one applies for an alcohol license for a hockey rink, but Sam's Club, couldnt get a license to sell alcohol (only so many licenses allowed w/i the city) Hhhhhhh puuiee

At least this makes sense. I walk my dogs by there all the time and the parking lot is usually over half full, even at 6 a.m. some days.
**
I'd much rather my tax payer money went to this than a huge tunnel that a simple chain link fence in the median would cure the need for and those exercising would only have to go 100 yards out of the way.

hey, the league will last forever and all the gm x'es can sell their houses to the tremendous influx of youth league families that are going to move to janesville so they can pay dpuble the property taxes they are now. janesville wants to draw businesses yet the school board and city council keep doing dumb stuff that raises taxes for the family. typical left wing loon thinking.

Wow, snuffy, have you even BEEN to a hockey game? My daughters play and I have hardly seen a "hot headed parent". Just because your friends act that way, doesn't mean that everyone does.
You obviously have no clue.

2yrs with people like you and your thinking. When the team starts playing you should actually go to a game and see for yor self. How many people are there and see how many fights. This is not just about the JR team. It is about the Janesville Youth Hockey teams and figure skaters and anbody who uses the rink

Lost city, I agree, 2 seasons. They will complain about the poor quality of the rink or some other lame excuse and leave.

We should start a pool on how long this league will last. My guess, two seasons.

The city needs to focus on getting jobs here in Janesville and not putting money into a run down skating rink. Special interest groups and people with money are alive and well in Janesville by forcing their agendas on all of us.

the city council spendaholics do what they want without regards to the economic climate or the overburdened taxpayer. they are cut from the same burlap as the school board. spend, spend, spend. up next, the new ice freezing equipment. while they are at it, a second zamboni would clean the ice quicker than just one.

Taxpayer monies, have already been allocated whether one goes to a hockey game or not. There are also other buildings, as well as facilities in this town, that need major repair and renovation besides the ice rink!

Here we go again:Janesville will be broke in less than 10 years if they keep spending money. It shows that no special group wants to donate money.Darien learned the hard way and most of there Govt.was voted out.The city of Delavan built a brand new skate park a couple of years ago by private donations and saved the city money. You can do your drinking at home or the tavern.....

Wohooo finally upgrades that have been needed for years.

And as someone posted if upgrades were done over the years it wouldnt cost this much. When I played as a kid, upgrades were needed and that was over 15 yrs ago. I feel bad for the people that dont support the ice rink, but it is needed. Give the kids and the parents for that matter, something to do in this boring town. Besides walking the trail, what is there to do?????????????? Go to a movie,or what???

Most people in this town complain that there is nothing for kids and parents and people in general to do. But the way it is.. there is nothing. If it takes a junior hockey team to "create" a social life than so be it. There are much worse things in this town than an ADULT enjoying a beer watching hockey.

GET OVER IT, THERE ARE FAR WORSE OTHER THINGS!!!

snuffy, that's a fascinating proposal. But it would take a lot of time to publicize everything and a lot of money to arrange for the referendum. Perhaps to make things simpler we could have a system where we elect representatives to some sort of council, and then they could make the decisions that they believe are best for the community and supported by it, using their judgement. I know, it's a crazy, crazy idea.

snuffy who do think are the "select few" yes there is a beer license (Scary, hockey, hot headed parents and spectators, and alcohol!! Bad combination) have you ever been to a junior game. Or are you the expert on this.
(If you rehab it, they still will not come) ? another expert? Again are we to just let it fall aprt and not fix what needs fixed.

the ice rinks upkeep was not done, it needs to be done. If they hadn't let it go for 30+ yrs then it wouldn't cost so much. The city needs to take care of things, we would never get away with letting our houses go for that long, the city would fine us.

I forgot to mention that I think that the people living in the City of Janesville should be the major decision makers when it comes to spending their tax dollars!! Maybe their should be some type of voting system in place when it comes to such matters?? Politics, huhhhh

Ridiculous!! No monies, no food, no jobs, no homes, no health insurance, soon, no SS, but... the city will sink $200,000 into an ice rink because only a "few select" people utilize it. Oh, forgot to mention that I am sure there is a liquor license for the place, coming down the pike. Scary, hockey, hot headed parents and spectators, and alcohol!! Bad combination. Maybe the 200,000 should go towards a homeless shelter/food pantry when jobless and homeless people will be faced with living on the street.
