Janesville’s Knutson third at conference tennis

Janesville Parker’s Matt Knutson finished third at No. 3 singles to highlight action Thursday for Janesville competitors int the Big Eight Conference tennis meet at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

Knutson (15-6) was the No. 3 seed in his bracket.

Middleton, the dual meet champion, won the 10-team title with 46 points. Madison East was second with 37, while Parker was sixth with 10. Janesville Craig finished 10th with 0 points.

Knutson, a sophomore, defeated Adam Saether of Verona, 6-4, 6-2, in the third-place match.

East’s Connor Gilmore won No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Middleton’s Robby Kutchin. Middleton’s Ian Markson and Alex Strunce captured the No. 1 doubles title with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Sam Schmidt and Kevin Reinke of Verona.

Parker’s Nick Gilbank (9-10), unseeded entering the meet, posted a 3-1 record during the tournament to finish fifth.

Parker and Craig will compete in a WIAA Division 1 subsectional Tuesday at Palmer Park in Janesville.
