— The winning ways continued Thursday afternoon for Janesville Craig High School’s baseball team.

The Cougars rallied with two runs in the fifth inning and got three-plus innings of one-hit relief pitching from Zach Bayreuther in upending Madison East, 6-4, in a Big Eight Conference game at Riverside Park.

Craig (15-4, 12-4) fell behind 4-3 in the fourth, but tied the game in the bottom of the inning on Bayreuther’s RBI single and took the lead for good in the fifth on RBI singles by Austin Geller and Nick Weber.

“It started with our defense tonight, and the pitching of Bayreuther,” Craig coach Vic Herbst said. “It took awhile to get the bats going, but we got some good swings the second and third time through the order.’’

Bayreuther got the win by not allowing a run in 3 1/3 innings. The senior struck out two and allowed only one hit.

Zach Whalen scored two runs for the Cougars, while Geller had two hits and two RBIs.

-- La Follette 10, Parker 6—Matt Zeier’s grand slam proved to be the difference for Madison La Follette in a Big Eight win over visiting Janesville Parker.

Parker (4-12, 6-15) took a 6-4 lead in the third, but La Follette put up four in the bottom of the inning on Zeier’s two-out grand slam to take the lead for good.

“I think we’ve outhit our opponents in three of the last four games but still get beat,” Parker coach Brian Martin said. “We just can’t put all three phases of the game together, and until we do, we’re going to keep struggling.

“We should’ve been out of the fourth inning when the kid hit the grand slam, but that’s kind of how the way things have been going.”

Kelly Silha had three hits and drove in three runs to lead the Vikings, while Ross Mauermann added two hits and scored twice.
