Brewers trade Gwynn Jr. to Padres
Saddled since the start of the season with a mostly unproductive bench, the Milwaukee Brewers have been trying to do something about it.
The Brewers made another move to shore up that area Thursday when they dealt Class AAA Nashville outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. to the San Diego Padres for outfielder Jody Gerut.
Gerut, 31, will provide a left-handed alternative for center fielder Mike Cameron and right fielder Corey Hart as well as a bat off the bench. He will join the Brewers tonight in Minnesota.
“We’re just trying to get better left-handed,” said general manager Doug Melvin, who said he took a run at Gerut late last season without success. “I’m concerned about us being so right-handed against right-handed pitching.”
Gerut, 31, was batting .221 with four home runs and 14 RBI in 37 games with the Padres, with a .248 on-base percentage and .381 slugging percentage.
