O’Leary, Mauermann top Parker athletes
Catie O’Leary and Ross Mauermann are at the top of their class in Janesville Parker High School athletics.
They were presented the American Legion Athletic Medal, the school’s highest interscholastic athletic honor, at the senior awards ceremony Wednesday night.
O’Leary is the daughter of Harry and Connie O’Leary. Mauermann is the son of John and Sarah Mauermann.
The annual Legion award, based on athletic participation and citizenship, has been presented in Janesville since 1922. It has gone to a male athlete at Parker and Craig each year since the school split in 1967, and this is its 22nd year as a co-ed award at each school.
It will be presented tonight at Craig.
Alexis Klawitter immediately preceded O’Leary on the Parker girls Legion honor roll. Klawitter follows Harold Lloyd as Parker’s 42nd male recipient.
O’Leary, who will attend the University of Wisconsin on a basketball scholarship, earned her Legion honor by winning 12 varsity letters. She will have earned four letters each in basketball and cross country, three in soccer and one in track.
As a three-time Most Valuable Player on her basketball team, O’Leary was named Player of the Year in the Big Eight Conference as a sophomore, junior and senior. She played on three Big Eight championship teams, was an Associated Press All-State first-team selection the last two years and received all-state honorable mention as a sophomore.
In finishing her high school basketball career with 1,464 points, O’Leary ranks third on the school’s all-time list behind only Jennah Burkholder Hartwig and Mistie Bass Williams.
O’Leary was an All-Big Eight first-team runner and WIAA state qualifier in cross country as a sophomore. She was voted Most Valuable on her team as a freshman, sophomore and junior.
With this year’s final honors still to be announced, O’Leary has received All-Big Eight honorable mention in soccer as a sophomore and junior.
Mauermann, who hopes to play for Janesville’s new Junior A hockey team, will finish his high school sports career with eight letters. He will have lettered four times in hockey and twice each in football and baseball.
As a member of Janesville’s co-op high school hockey team, Mauermann led the Bluebirds to the 2007-08 Big Eight championship and a berth in the WIAA state tournament. He was named the conference Player of the Year that season and as a senior, when he was an all-state first-team selection and Mr. Hockey finalist.
Mauermann also received All-Big Eight hockey honorable mention as a sophomore, all-state honorable mention as a junior and was a Bluebird captain as a senior.
Along with her Legion honor, O’Leary received the U.S. Army Reserve Scholar/Athlete Award and a Westside Basketball Booster Club scholarship.
Basketball booster club scholarships also went to Jason Knutson, son of Brian and Jan Knutson; Adrienne McDonald, daughter of Francis and Janice McDonald; and Jenna Miland, daughter of Daniel Miland.
Dustin Moench, son of Thomas and Roxane Moench, joined O’Leary in receiving the U.S. Army Reserve Scholar/Athlete Award. Moench and Nicole Richardson, daughter of Scott and Teri Richardson, also were recognized as the school’s nominees for the WIAA Scholar/Athlete Award.
