Businesses can sign up for the free “Hire a Neighbor” program by contacting Mary Fanning-Penny, business and employment services manager with the Southwest Wisconsin Development Board at (608) 741-3502.

— Local job seekers and employers now have another tool to help rebuild a local economy devastated by job losses and high unemployment rates.

The Southwest Wisconsin Workforce Development Board announced Wednesday that it has partnered with the online jobs site Monster.com to develop a program to match dislocated workers and employers within a 100-mile radius of Janesville.

The “Hire a Neighbor” program will supplement the traditional programs offered through the Rock County Job Center.

“It’s one more tool for us, a much larger tool and a more recognizable tool,” said Bob Borremans, the board’s executive director.

“The strength of Monster.com is that it can very easily match the job candidate’s strengths with those of the business, hopefully resulting in less wasted time and effort on behalf of the both the individual and the company.”

The development board bought a resume search license from Monster.com so local employers can use the site before paying for a job posting or contracting with a placement agency. The program allows any employer within 100 miles of Janesville to contact the development board. Staff will then help the company search for eligible workers.

That’s a service the development board and the local job center have provided for some time, but the affiliation allows job seekers and employers use of Monster.com’s extensive tools for free, Borremans said.

For the program to work, Borremans urges dislocated workers to post their resumes on Monster.com. Posting on several sites improves the chances for landing a job, he said.

“By putting your resume on Monster, you become more visible to local employers and thus have a better chance of landing a job,” he said.

gmaof- I agree with most of what you write..However, with the status of our community (and if GM goes Bankrupt-slash subpay), folks will have to relocate no matter what.. We can all try to help eachother, but without real help from the government- this area will go down fast..

Anyone can go to the library and use their high-speed internet connection for free. The local unemployment rate in Rock County, is the highest in our state. There were over 600 people who applied for a position at the new "Buffalo Wings" restaurant. YES, resumes make a difference!
.
If you're out of a job, waiting for 5 minutes for a page to load - is no big deal. And yes, you seem a bit cynical. Families can't even buy food to feed their families.
.
Adding insult to injury, we have the least positions available in our county for unskilled workers, making even minimum wage.
.
When unemployment runs out for these people, how are they going to survive? We have a lot of very hard workers in our community with NO options. Retraining/education takes time. How are they supposed to make ends meet in the interim?
.
The next school year is just 3 months away. How are they supposed to even cover the bare necessities of required school supplies and fees? I for one, want to donate school supplies. I will be buying items over the next couple of months to help out. Anyone else who has a few extra dollars might want to consider chiming in to help out these kids who have absolutely NO control over why everything has taken such a dramatic turn for the worse, in the BIG adult world.
.
Children feel the impact, they watch Mom & Dad struggle. They see the tension and know something is very, VERY wrong. Its not fair to these little ones.
.
I think this connection to monster.com is a good move, but neighbor helping neighbor could help in the short term.

Since when does a person need a resume to flip burgers, wait tables, or work in a mini-mart?
Isn't that about all that's left? Or am I just being cynical?
Also, unless you have a pricy high-speed internet connection, that Monster.com takes FOREVER to load.
