— Shelby Demos hardly broke a sweat Tuesday night. She didn’t need to.

The Janesville Parker High School senior won two events int the Big Eight Conference track and field meet and was done for the night before many fans could even find a place to park.

Demos capped off a spectacular Big Eight career by winning the high jump and the 100 high hurdles for the third straight year. By adding two more wins to her impressive resume, Demos finished with eight individual conference titles.

Sun Prairie upended Middleton’s quest for a third straight girls team title. Sun Prairie finished with 141 points to edge the defending two-time champs by six points. Parker was sixth, and Janesville Craig was ninth.

Madison West won the boys title for the first time in more than 25 years. Parker was sixth and Craig was seventh, while the Verona boys finished second in their inaugural season in the Big Eight.

After breaking a longstanding school record 10 days ago in the high jump, Demos stopped Tuesday after clearing 5-4 on her first jump. Demos’ younger sister, Paige, finished second (5-2) in the event for the second straight year.

Shelby, the defending WIAA Division 1 state champion, said taking a stab at the Big Eight record of 5-8 set by Ann Ewing of Janesville Craig in 1978 was not an option.

“It was not about any records today,” Demos said. “My left shin was getting a little sore, so I decided to call it quits.

“After clearing 5-9, I know what I’m capable of jumping. I just want to be fresh with what’s coming up the next couple weeks.”

Shelby won the 100 high hurdles with a time of 15.86, more than a half-second ahead of Middleton’s Erin McCauley (16.53).

Two other Janesville athletes also repeated as champions. Parker’s Cody Speaker won his second straight pole vault title after clearing 13-6.

The boys pole vault was the city’s best finish in any event as Craig’s Alex Crandall was second at 13-0. and Parker’s Travis Rucinski was third at 12-9.

Craig’s JoJo Pregont, a three-event state qualifier a year ago, retained his title in the boys long jump. The senior soared 21-6½ to edge Madison West’s Leighton Settle. Pregont was also second in the triple jump and third in the high jump.

The Parker boys 1,600-meter relay team capped off the meet by finishing a close second in the last event. The team of Dan Treinen, Ryan Shelton, Adam Vesterfelt and LaVell Hewlett ran a season-best 3:28.65, but West’s Armani Davis ran a blazing final 400 split to give the Regents a win with a time of 3:27.86.

Madison La Follette’s Alex Brill set the meet’s only record. The senior won the boys 1,600 with a time of 4:17.99 to break to break the 4:18.9 record time of Craig’s Josh Lund set in 2007.
