WCLO's Steve Benton reports a Janesville police department self defense course is in demand.

RSS

— A Janesville police department self defense training course for women is booked until October.

Trainer, Sgt. Brian Donohoue, says the class has been popular since its inception. He says they're partnering with local companies and the Mercy Health system in setting up the monthly, two hour sessions.

He says women are taught basic self defense techniques, but are also shown how to become more aware of their surroundings, which can help determine the outcome of a potentially dangerous situation.

Since the classes are so popular, Donohoue suggests putting your name on the waiting list. You can do that by calling the Marcy Health System "health-line" at 756-6100 or (888) 39-MERCY.

biggirl, the YWCA offers these classes, but Sgt. Donohoue is the instructor. Great classes! As I understand it, Crimestoppers receives grant funds to offer the classes through the JPD and Sgt. Donohoue has been busy with these classes for several years. It is definitely worth getting your name on the list for! I took the class a few years ago.

I'd be interested to know if this is the only self-defense class in the area, especially since this one is full. Surely this is one of the things that community colleges should be doing. Surely, also either of the Ys should be offering such classes. Do they?
