The Janesville Education Association and the school board are starting the next round of teacher contract negotiations.

Steve Salerno, director of human services, says both the JEA and the school board negotiating teams need to educate themselves about certain aspects on the contract proposals. He says lane advancement and college credit on the salary schedule might not look like they cost a lot of money, but they will eventually cost the district.

Meanwhile, Jim Reif, JEA's lead negotiator, says the two sides are coming from completely different places. He says not one of the union's proposals were about money, lane advancement or improvement. He says the teachers want to create an inviting work environment.

The two sides will meet again June 3 after exchanging proposals Tuesday night.

That meeting will be closed to the public, at the request of the school board negotiators.
