Darien plans to televise sewers
DARIEN The wet spring has not been easy on the aging village sewer system.
The new village board wasted no time trying to solve the problem.
Board members Monday night unanimously voted to direct village staff to apply for two low-interest loans to fund repairs to the sewer system.
The board also directed village engineers to finish "televising" the first of three sections of the village's sewer system. Televising is an engineering term for putting cameras into sewer pipes.
That work hopefully will be done before the board's regular June meeting, said engineer Brandon Foss of Crispell-Snyder Professional Consultants of Lake Geneva.
The sewers that will be televised first are in the north central and south central area of the village, Foss said.
The video images of the system will help village officials and residents understand where and why clean water is leaking into the system.
It also will help contractors make accurate bids for repairs, Foss said.
The village won't know the price tag for the work until bids are let, but Foss on Monday told board members repairs shouldn't cost more than $2.4 million.
Foss surveyed two contractors and told board members:
-- It could cost $28 per foot to repair sewer mains.
-- It could cost $4,000 to $4,500 per lateral for repairs.
The village has 31,000 feet of sewers, Foss said.
The $2.4 million estimate assumes every inch of sewer needs repair, and that's not the case, Foss said.
"That's not going to happen," he said.
Video of the system will show that some parts of the sewer are in good shape, Foss said.
But the clay sewers installed in the 1970's are at the end of their design life, Foss said. That's something municipalities are experiencing across the nation, he said.
"It's not just a Darien problem or a Wisconsin problem," Foss said.
Village residents are pumping about 120,000 gallons per day from the village wells, Darien Public Works Superintendent Greg Epping said. But the village currently is pumping about 300,000 gallons of water per day to the Walworth County Metropolitan Sewerage District, he added.
It was worse at the beginning of May when the village was pumping 500,000 gallons per day to the Walworth County Metropolitan Sewage District, or WalCoMet, Epping said.
The village intends to pay for the overage with interest the tax incremental finance district owes the sewer utility.

Mustang Your comment about renters not having rights does not make sense. If the owner of the house is going to get charged because their renter is violating the 2 dog policy then he should have the right to ask them to leave. If a dog bit someone and they are violating the limit then it should be enforced.

I want to know how many people in darien don!t own their homes. I was just told that Renters have no rights in town. One renter just got told they had to move because the V.P. friend is mad over her dogs. They have lived here awhile. Now the owner of the house was told he would be charged if they stayed. Another person has fought the board for over a year and she did not have to move.Is this what we asked for? Is it who you know?
