East Troy, Whitewater win Rock Valley track titles
ORFORDVILLE Whitewater High’s girls track and field team made its Rock Valley meet debut here Saturday riding a 15-year conference title winning streak dating back to the Whippets’ days in the Southern Lakes.
East Troy, the Whippets’ former Southern Lakes rival who joined them in the new Rock Valley, made sure that winning streak was left in the past—winning six individual and three relay titles to lead the 12-team field with 126 points.
“We felt pretty confident coming in because of our depth,” said East Troy senior Tia Nowak, who set a meet record in the 400, won the long jump and anchored the winning 1,600-meter relay to pace the Trojans. “We were hoping to win, but nothing as spectacular as this.”
East Troy junior Jasmine Haines earned the meet’s most valuable female track performer award after sweeping the 100 and 200 dash titles and anchoring the winning 800 relay team. She won the 100 and 200 in the Southern Lakes last year.
Other champions for East Troy were Meghan Valentine (800) and Alyssa Duncan (1,600) along with the 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams.
Whitewater was second with 103 points, behind Angela McKenzie, who won the 3,200 and was second in the 1,600, and freshman thrower Molly Griep, who swept the shot put and discus titles to become the meet’s most valuable female field-event performer.
East Troy opened the meet by setting a record in the girls 3.200 relay, finishing in 10 minutes, 14.0 seconds. The team of Valentine, Katie Isleb, Gina Alagna and Duncan broke the record of 10:17.08 set by Beloit Turner in 1994.
Nowak won the 400-meter dash in 58.21 seconds, breaking the previous record of 59.93 seconds set by Palmyra-Eagle star Lisa Kincaid in 1994.
The Trojans set their final record in the 1,600 relay behind Valentine, Isleb, Brooksie Loth and Nowak, who combined to finish in 4:09.55 and erase the previous mark of 4:11.86 set by Clinton in 1989.
“We’ve worked hard for this. Ever since my freshman year, our goal was to knock off Whitewater,” said Duncan.
Whitewater sprinter and jumper Michael Mitchell was sporting a team t-shirt that bore the slogan “Another beautiful day for track and field in Wisconsin.”
While the saying was a knock on the state’s usually temperamental spring weather, it summed up another top-notch performance by the Whitewater boys. The Whippets won nine individual titles and scored in 17 of 18 events. to run away with their first Rock Valley championship with 189 points.
McFarland was second with 103. Defending champion Brodhead/Juda, which had won eight of the previous nine boys titles, was fifth with 60.
The Whitewater boys entered the meet with 12 Southern Lakes titles in last 15 years, including last season, and dominated the Rock Valley meet from start to finish. The Whippets’ multiple-event winners included juniors Jake Dennis (100, 200) and Tony Floyd (110 high hurdles, 300 intermediate hurdles), who shared the most valuable male track event performer award, and Ben Cipriano (1,600, 3,200).
Whitewater junior Tony Bilderback was named the meet’s male most valuable field event performer after winning the triple jump and taking second in the high jump. He also ran a leg on the runner-up 1,600 relay team.
“We just came out to do our best and have fun today,” Bilderback said. “It was a great day for both of our teams.”
