Pointers power past Bucs
OSHKOSH UW-Stevens Point’s power hitters knocked sixth-seeded Beloit College out of NCAA Division III regional baseballl tournament play here Thursday.
The fifth-seeded WIAC champions rode three home runs to an 8-2 victory in the second round of the double-elimination tournament, ending Beloit’s season at 28-9.
Stevens Point (30-15) plays at 1 p.m. today against an opponent that was to be determined Thursday night.
Designated hitter Sam Spurney’s solo homer highlighted a three-run second inning against the Bucs that put Stevens Point in control at 3-0.
Beloit battled back with some power of its own in a two-run seventh. Mike Moss got a one-out single to left field, and Jon Moran followed with a two-run homer.
Rick Chernik then was hit by a pitch, Mike Kobach singled, and Scott Slubowski walked to load the bases two outs. But the Bucs’ threat ended with an infield out. Beloit left 10 runners on base, bringing its two-game total to 24.
