JANESVILLE Janesville Parker High School made the best of its last chance and snared a 6-5 victory over Verona in Big Eight Conference baseball here Tuesday.
The Vikings scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to improve to 4-9 in the Big Eight and 6-11 overall.
Trailing 5-2, Parker’s Ross Mauermann and Kelly Silha each smacked RBI singles to cut the defcit to 5-4.
Kyle Johnson took a bases-loaded walk to tie it at 5-5 and Matt Fiedler was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in the winning run.
Johnson pitched the first five innings for Parker and allowed five runs on 10 hits, but walked just one. Andrew Kersten allowed one hit and walked none through the final two innings to gain the victory.
“The key here was we gave up 11 hits, but for the most part we played good defense and we we didn’t walk a lot of people,” Parker coach Brian Martin said. “When you can keep your walks and errors down, then you stand a good chance of winning despite giving up a lot of hits.’’
Parker will travel to Sun Prairie for a 5 p.m. game this Friday.
