Parker rules in tuneup
BELOIT The Janesville Parker boys and girls track and field teams tuned up for the Big Eight Conference Meet with an impressive performance Tuesday night.
The Viking girls, behind a dominating effort in the two hurdle races, breezed past crosstown rival Janesville Craig and Beloit Memorial. Parker beat the Cougars, 85-56, and topped Beloit, 85-50. The Craig High girls beat Beloit, 84-56.
Parker’s boys team rallied in the last four events of the meet to beat Beloit, 73-68, and cruised past the Cougar boys, 93-48.
Shelby Demos again paced the Parker girls. The defending Division 1 state high jump champion won that event, as well as the 100 high hurdles and ran on the winning 800-meter relay team.
The Vikings also got individual wins from Kelsey Jones in the 200 (27.59); Cassie Niles in the 300 low hurdles (51.03); Erika Moen in the discus (109-5) and Kristin Zeilinger in the pole vault (8-0).
“For not being 100 percent, we had a real good team effort tonight,” Parker girls coach Dave Lehmann said. “Any time a meet involves local teams, you hope your kids come to compete and we did tonight.”
The Cougars girls got wins from Caroline Shea in the 400 (1:02.44); Katherine Bagley in the 800 (2:33.64); Cassidi Running in the 1,600 (5:31); Megan Muhs in the 3,200 (12:25) and Kaylyn Funk in the shot put with a throw of 33-1.
“We knew coming in we weren’t going to be able to beat Parker,” Craig girls coach Mark Marsden said. “But I was pleased because we were able to experiment in some events, and try to start preparing for the conference meet next Tuesday.”
The Parker boys got wins from Calvin Nauer in the shot put and discus, and won the meet thanks to victories by the 1,600 relay team in the last running event of the night and Cody Speaker’s pole vault victory in the last event.
“The bottom line is that coming off the Spartan Invitational on Friday, we weren’t sure what to expect tonight,” Parker boys coach Joe Dye said. “But it was a good night. The kids stepped up and got the job done.”
Viking senior Duncan Brose won the 800, while LaVell Hewlett ran a 51.61 to win the 400.
JoJo Pregont, a state qualifier in three events a year ago, won the long jump and triple jump on Tuesday for the Cougars. Pregont was joined in the winner’s circle by senior Ryan Ahrens, who won both the 1,600 and 3,200.
“This was a meet for us to try and sort some things out as far as what kids are going to run once we get into tournament competition,” Craig boys coach Jeff Deininger said. “Ryan had a great night, and I really liked what I saw from our 800 runners who are vying for a spot on the 3,200 relay team.”
