Fire guts Beloit home
BELOIT Beloit firefighters responded to a house fire on the city's west side Wednesday morning.
The alarm sounded around 5:30 and the first personnel to arrive, at 1619 Garfield Avenue, saw smoke and flames coming from the rear of the single story ranch style structure.
The lone occupant of the house was able to escape without injury.
Deputy Fire Chief Bryan Northrop, says the preliminary cause of the fire is listed as improper storage of fireplace ashes. He says it appears a metal bucket containing the ashes, tipped over on a rear deck, and ignited the porch and then the house.
Northrop says the house was gutted and is not habitable.
