Beloit residential fires result in citations

Beloit residents are receiving citations after two residential fires Wednesday.

The two fires didn't have much in common. In one case, burning embers sparked $40,000 damage. In the other, a malfunctioning bathroom ventilation fan caused about $200 damage. However, both properties are rental units and neither of the units had working smoke detectors. Beloit's ordinance requires the landlords to install the smoke detectors and the occupants to maintain them. In the larger fire, there were no smoke detectors at all, and the landlord received a citation. In the smaller fire, the smoke detectors did not have batteries and so the tenants were issued citations.

$20-$75 for a smoke/carbon monoxide detector vs. a life and/or a place to live. Hmmm, I know what I would do.
