— A Milton Police Department employee has been put on paid administrative leave after being named a possible suspect in a criminal investigation.

The employee is assigned to work in the Milton School District, according to a news release from police Chief Jerry Schuetz.

Schuetz would not confirm or deny that the employee is the department's school resource officer.

The department learned of the criminal investigation Sunday from another Rock County law enforcement agency, Schuetz said. It put the employee on paid leave the same day.

The Janesville Police Department, Rock County Sheriff's Office and Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation are involved in the investigation, the news release said.

Schuetz declined to talk about the nature of the potential crime, including whether a school or students were involved. He declined to say when and where the alleged crime took place.

"It's something that could potentially affect a lot of people," he told WCLO Radio.

The department told police and school district employees about the investigation before issuing the news release late Monday afternoon.

"As soon as we were made aware of it, we felt it was important that our employees and the public be made aware of what we were doing," Schuetz said.

He said he hopes to release more information by the end of the week.

"As soon as we are able to make more information available, we will do that," he said.
