City council approves ice arena alcohol sales, parking garage
You can drink at the rink.
The Janesville City Council approved an alcohol license for Wisconsin Hockey Partners for alcohol sales and consumption during their Junior "A" hockey games. Alcohol wouldn't be allowed in the warming room, although some council members considered creating greater restrictions. City Manager Eric Levitt told the council that WHP wants the atmosphere to be family-friendly so they attract fans to their games.
Later Monday night, the council went into closed session to discuss the city's contract with WHP. When it reconvened into open session, council members discussed the logistics of a new ice arena, renovations of the current arena, and how much money they should spend on renovations if a new arena would be attractive to WHP. The council affirmed its commitment to the project and to the hockey franchise's future in Janesville.
The council agreed to stick to its $200,000 budget for ice arena repairs, while approving $4.4 million for a new parking structure in downtown Janesville.
The four-level parking structure would be built on the surface lot at Wall Street and North Parker Drive, where a former parking garage once stood. The structure is considered a tool for economic development and downtown revitalization.
Construction begins in September.
