The Janesville Area PTA is focusing on truancy Monday night during a live call-in television show on the school district's public access channel.

President Kristin Hesselbacher says municipal fines could bring complications. She says it's hard to determine whether to fine the child or the parents, since parents are responsible for the children at the elementary level. She says she's not sure how to implement municipal fines, or how effective it would be.

Truancy is often part of a bigger picture, like trouble at home or drug use.

The show's panel includes Dr. Alison Spiegel, Assistant Principal at Craig High School; Angela Lynch and Glenda Benton, social workers; Scott Garner, Principal at Washington Elementary; Jim LeMire, Assistant Principal at Edison Middle School; and Rock County Circuit Court Judge Alan Bates.
