UW-Whitewater tennis teams swing into tourney action
It’s NCAA Division III tournament weekend for UW-Whitewater men’s and women’s tennis.
The Warhawk men (21-8), making their third straight NCAA appearance, begin regional team play Friday against WIAC rival UW-Eau Claire (24-9) at St. Peter, Minn. The winner plays host Gustavus Adolphus (25-8) in Saturday’s semifinals.
Luther College (36-5) faces Concordia, Wis. (14-10) in Friday’s other first-round match. The winner goes against Texas-Tyler (19-6) in the semifinals.
Saturday’s winners play Sunday for the regional title.
Whitewater is led by senior Alex Lowe, who has the most wins (168 in singles and doubles) in Warhawk history. He has played in the No. 1 and 2 positions all four years and is 18-14 at No. 1 singles this year.
Whitewater’s second-seeded women’s team also will be at St. Peter for regional play. The Warhawks, who received a first-round bye, open Friday against the winner of today’s match between Wheaton (16-4) and Edgewood (13-8).
Top-seeded Gustavus Adolphus (21-9) also received a first-round and plays Friday in the semifinals against Luther (30-9) or St. Scholastica (17-9). The semifinal winners play Saturday for the regional title and a spot in the May 19-21 final eight at Lawrenceville, Ga.
Whitewater earned an automatic berth in the women’s tournament by winning the WIAC final-four tournament. The Warhawks also won WIAC dual title, then won all nine flights in the conference tournament.
The Warhawk women are led by freshman Kalla Schaefer (32-5), the first male or female tennis player in UW-W history to win 30 matches in a season.
