MADISON — AB 253 and the companion bill in the Senate are ready for floor action when the legislature reconvenes May 13th.

Assembly Speaker, Mike Sheridan of Janesville, says He's "pleased that this compromise plan will deliver smoke-free, healthy Wisconsin workplaces and provide business owners the time they need to transition." Sheridan says getting support from restaurant owners and tavern owners was a big step. He says a "grandfather clause" will allow existing cigar bars to continue operating because that's their sole purpose.

The bill is expected to pass in both the Senate and Assembly, and be on Governor Doyle's desk within a couple weeks. If signed, it would take affect July 5th, 2010. The extra time will give tavern owners a chance to make necessary changes to their businesses.
