WCLO's Steve Benton reports on an annual physical fitness even at Harrison elementary school in Janesville.
JANESVILLE Students and staff at Harrison elementary school in Janesville are scheduled to take part in the 5th annual "Shape Up Wisconsin" program Thursday afternoon.
Physical education teacher, Cindy Dueth, says they've combined physical activity with math to keep track of the number of steps participants take, and are trying to beat last year's record. She says each participant will have to walk, or run, about one mile in order to reach their goal of 1,400,000 steps.
The activity is expected to start around 2:15 with stretching exercises and the walk / run will conclude around 2:45.
Dueth says teaching students how to remain physically active into their adult lives is part of the curriculum at the school. In case of inclement weather, the event will take place in the gymnasium.
