Parker’s struggles continue vs. East
JANESVILLE Until the Janesville Parker High baseball team starts eliminating the mental and physical mistakes, the struggles are going to continue.
The Vikings commited six errors, walked seven batters and basically played sloppy baseball Tuesday in a 19-7 Big Eight Conference loss to Madison East at Riverside Park. Tuesday’s loss was Parker’s third straight by 10 or more runs.
“There are going to be some changes,” Parker coach Brian Martin said of his lineup. “There’s no excuse for the way we played today. We dropped fly balls, had a fly ball drop in between two outfielders, and our pitchers walked way too many.
“East got 13 runners on base by either a walk or an error, and I bet the majority of them scored.”
Parker (4-9, 3-8) fell behind 8-0 in the third inning and could not mount a comeback against East
(4-7, 4-7) starter Max Strommen. The righthander allowed seven runs on 10 hits but was able to wiggle out of any serious trouble in the second, fourth and fifth.
Pete Strommen and Coleman Fraser paced the Purgolder attack. Pete Strommen blasted a three-run homer as part of a six-run third, while Fraser finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI.
Trailing 8-0, Parker got on the board with a run in the third on Ross Mauermann’s RBI single. Tanner Moe, who drove in three runs for the Vikings, cut East’s lead to 11-3 in the fourth with a sacrifice fly.
Trent Kobs started for the Vikings and suffered the loss. The sophomore was hurt by some sloppy fielding and four walks as he allowed 10 runs in three-plus innings of work.
“The defense let Trent down a couple of times when he should’ve been out of an inning,” Martin said.
“And once again, we got down early and our dobbers went down right away. You can’t stand around and feel sorry for yourself when there’s still a lot of baseball to be played.”
Parker will get a chance to redeem itself this afternoon with a nonconference game against Westosha Central at 5 p.m. at Riverside Park.
