GENEVA TOWNSHIP Sal Dimiceli has seen it firsthand: Hundreds of people in Walworth County are struggling to keep food on the table, and the local food pantries just can't keep up.
He plans to change that.
Dimiceli, the founder of Time is Now to Help, a nonprofit organization that provides poverty-stricken people with basic necessities, has opened the Walworth County Family Resource Center at the intersection of county H and NN, just outside the city of Lake Geneva.
Eleven food pantries throughout the county serve dozens of people each month on limited supplies of food, Dimiceli said.
The needs continue to grow, and another food pantry—one capable of providing food for hundreds of people each month—will help ease the burden, he said.
"We alone cannot support every single person who needs food, but we can help take some of the pain of hunger away," Dimiceli said.
The Walworth County Family Resource Center is not an ordinary food pantry.
The shelves are lined with the familiar boxes of cereal, cans of soup and jars of peanut butter. But the pantry shelves also are stocked with chicken, hamburgers and brats; shampoo, deodorant and bandages; and toilet paper, diapers and pet food.
Dimiceli said his dream became a reality in a hurry.
A local man donated the building. A local builders group donated the labor to renovate the building. A local couple donated the refrigerators and freezers.
Donated funds covered the cost of stocking the shelves.
Dimiceli said the community support behind Time is Now helped get the food pantry off the ground.
"When this needed to get done, we had an army of God-loving people who wanted to help," he said.
Dimiceli said people are willing to jump in when they realize their friends, neighbors and co-workers are in trouble.
"They're so willing to rally around the community," he said.
