Mike Nanstad saw to that the Albion Tigers got their 64th season of amateur baseball off to a roaring start.
Nanstad gave up one run on two hits and struck out 16 in seven innings Sunday as the Tigers began their title bid in the West Division of the Home Talent League’s Southeast Section with a 4-3 win over visiting Orfordville.
Aaron Laskowski’s RBI ground out in the second inning gave Albion its first run, and the Tigers made it 2-0 after an error on the next pitch. Corey Vickers pushed it to 3-0 with an RBI single in the third.
After the Orioles got a run in the seventh, Aaron Manogue singled home Jim Eastman in the Albion eighth for what proved to be the winning run.
Nanstad recorded strikeouts in his last 12 outs before being relieved by Ben Everson in the eighth. Everson gave up two runs in the eighth, but he held the Orioles scoreless in the ninth after they put the tying and winning runs on base.
In other Southeast action, Utica defeated Evansville, 10-2; Fort Atkinson routed Whitewater, 10-1; Deerfield topped Lake Mills, 5-3; and Stoughton edged Lodi, 8-7.
n Utica 10, Evansville 2—Utica took control in a five-run second inning, and Scott Hestnes limited the Jays to one run and six hits through five innings in a battle of last year’s West Division co-champions.
Tim Knapp drove in three runs to spark Utica’s offense. Jeremy Rasmussen, Jon Frey and Kendall Buttchen each had two of Evansville’s nine hits.
n Fort Atkinson 10, Whitewater 1—The defending East Division champions jumped to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning and rode Chris Koepke’s strong pitching to a decisive victory over the Swingers.
Koepke gave up one run on three hits through seven innings, while his team built a 9-1 lead. Jacob Soriano went 3-for-4 to lead the Generals’ nine-hit attack, and Tim Brokl was 2-for-3, including two doubles.
n Deerfield 5, Lake Mills 3—Deerfield built a 5-0 lead and withstood Lake Mills’ three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth.
n Stoughton 8, Lodi 7—Eric Engler had 13 strikeouts and a home run to lead visiting Stoughton past Lodi, whose comeback fell short in a five-run ninth inning.
