Whitewater, Marian split

FOND DU LAC — UW-Whitewater split a nonconference college baseball doubleheader at Marian College on Thursday, losing 6-4 in the first game and winning, 13-6 in the second.

Whitewater (24-13) fell behind 4-0 in the first inning of the opener. Kevin Zalnis drove in two runs for the Warhawks, who scored three times in the eighth to cut the deficit to 5-4.

Whitewater took control from the start in the second game. Zalnis’ two-run double in the fourth gave the Warhawks a 4-0 lead.

Ryan Leavitt’s two-run double, and Matt Beyer’s two-run homer in the five-run fifth gave Whitewater an 11-1 lead.

Leavitt and Beyer each had four hits to lead the Warhawks’ 18-hit attack.

Whitewater (15-9) is done with Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. The Warhawks trail Stevens Point (13-7), which plays at Platteville in doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday. Third-place Oshkosh (12-8) is at Superior for two closing doubleheaders this weekend.

The Warhwks play at Concordia in a nonconference doubleheader Tuesday.
