Asking gun owners to keep track of their weapon's serial numbers makes sense to Beloit City Council President Jim Van de Bogart.

The reaction follows a proposal being considered by the Deputy Police Chief to require gun owners keep better personal records. Police officials say, of the 46 guns reported stolen this year, fewer than half have known serial numbers.

Van de Bogart says it makes sense to keep serial numbers of valuable items like computers, televisions, and bicycles, in the hopes of having them returned by police if stolen.
