— Janesville Craig’s softball team got the 2009 season off to a successful start.

Hayley Bayreuther went 3-for-5 at the plate, and the Cougars played solid defense en route to a 7-5 nonconference win over Fort Atkinson.

Craig High trailed 5-2 in the sixth, but scored four runs on five hits to take the lead for good.

“With the way the weather can be, it’s always good to get a game in this early in the season,” Craig coach Dan Bayreuther said. “I’m pretty happy with the way we played, especially on defense.

“Our pitchers only walked one batter, and we swung the bats pretty well against (Emilie) Bakken, who is going to be one of the better pitchers in the Badger Conference.”

The Cougars banged out nine hits, including three off the bat of the freshman Bayreuther. Her RBI single in the top of the sixth started the four-run rally, and Audrey Freeman and Whitney Oliver also added RBI singles in the inning.

Freeman and Oliver each finished with two hits for the Cougars, while Niki Boos had a double and a triple for Fort Atkinson. Bakken, a first-team All-Southern Lakes Conference selection a year ago, finished with nine strikeouts.

Craig hosts Waunakee in a nonconference game at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Dawson Field.
