UW-Whitewater notched a doubleheader sweep in nonconference softball and celebrated a milestone for coach Brenda Volk on Wednesday at Clermont, Fla.

Volk notched her 300th career victory as the Warhawks downed Eastern Connecticut State, 10-2, to avenge their only loss of the season. Whitewater whipped D’Youville College of Buffalo, N.Y., 12-0, to complete the sweep.

Volk is 301-141-4 in 11 seasons as Whitewater coach. Volk has coached the Warhawks to three Wisconsin Intercollegiate College Conference championships, two WIAC tournament titles and runner-up in the NCAA Division III National Championship game last season.

In avenging its only loss, Whitewater (9-1) scored four runs in the bottom of the first and rolled to the five-inning victory over Eastern Connecticut State.

Whitewater starting pitcher Jessica Stang (4-1) threw a two-hitter, striking out six and walking one.

Orfordville Parkview graduate Amy Gahl went 3-for-3, including a double, a triple and a pair of RBIs. Teammate Suzanne Gersich cracked a solo home run.

In Game 2, the Warhawks made quick work of D’Youville.

Gahl again led the charge once again, with a homer to lead off the bottom of the first inning and give the Warhawks the only run they needed.

Whitewater (9-1) added 10 runs in the second, as the game was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Dianna Frisbie pitched three innings to pick up her first win of the season.

The Warhawks play Union College and Buffalo State today to conclude their spring trip.
