Child abuse suspect pleads not guilty

— A former Janesville man accused of participating in the beating of a 3-year-old girl pleaded not guilty in Rock County Court on Tuesday.

Norbert Cruz Cantu III, 28, of 1712 White Ave., Beloit, is charged with felony intentional child abuse.

Co-defendant Stephanie A. Witt, 21, of 865 Holiday Drive, Beloit, stood mute in court earlier this month on felony charges of reckless child abuse and intentional child abuse. The court entered a not guilty plea for her.

Witt and Cantu were together at 922 Suffolk Drive, Apt. A, Janesville, when the abuse began Dec. 31, according to the criminal complaint.

They are accused of hitting the girl and bruising her head and body, according to the criminal complaint.

The girl was flown to UW Children's Hospital in Madison and had brain surgery, according to the criminal complaint.

Witt and Cantu remain free on signature bonds.
