Former day care center director arrested

JANESVILLE Faith Lutheran Church leaders suspected something wasn't right in the day care center's paperwork.
A special audit later led to the firing and arrest of the center's director, attorney Scott Schroeder said.
Deborah L. Wright, 38, of 3204 Rose Court, Beloit, was arrested Wednesday on charges of embezzling more than $50,000 from Faith Lutheran Church's day care center.
Janesville police arrested Wright, the former day care director, on seven counts of felony embezzlement and 46 counts of misdemeanor embezzlement.
Police say Wright, while entrusted with the accounts for Little Friends Day Care, stole more than $50,000 from 2006 through 2008.
The church fired Wright immediately upon receiving information that money was missing, Schroeder said.
Police say Wright used the money for a variety of expenses including vacations and mortgage payments.
"There were indications that some of the paperwork was not accurate," Schroeder said. "The church did a special audit once some inconsistencies came to light."
Wright is being held at the Rock County Jail and was expected to make an initial court appearance this afternoon.
The day care program still is running, Schroeder said.
"Other employees have picked up the slack, and the program has gone forward without interruption," he said.

She was stealing most of the time she worked there. She hid it for a long time. The only reason why she got caught was because the staff went to the paster about something totally different and the paster said he would check in to it and asked the assistant director for her key to the file cabinet. She said Debbie had taken it and had not given it back. He then went to look for the spare and that was in Debbie's possession as well he thought that was a little fishy so he called the board members and they "broke in" to the cabinet and found all sorts of stuff, and lots of receipts that were for personal stuff. Such as her personal cell phone bills, salon appointments, house payments, other credit card bills - all that were being paid for with the credit card the church issued her with to pay for daycare stuff. They also found out they were very behind on their own bills as she was not paying them.

She got her punishment and will have to pay it all back as well, she should. My question to you all is have you never made a mistake. I know I have made allot in my life although I did not steal, so stop already she is the one who has to live with all of this.
I know her, as my grandson went to daycare there I did not care for her much but wow, you guys are mean.

ANYWAY - Id like to add that she also did other things other than steal money. For one she hid paper work so that she could hire a convicted felon! She should be getting an endangering safety of children also.

I love how religion preaches about love and understanding until they are fooled, then it turns to instant banishment to a fiery hell for eternity, where the "evil" ones belong. Never really seen a happy medium with the church...

For the record, it was somewhat better. I believe, however, she was suspected and caught for stealing, not steeling. I doubt her boss felt she had a side career in the steel industry unless she is hiding yet another transgression! The story continues to develop untold tangents!!
Sorry, I'll discontinue trolling on poor grammar and spelling - it's a pet peeve when English is butchered by those who seem to "speak"(type) the loudest on these forums. It's my problem and not yours.
I truly hope this individual is given the opportunity to repay her debt both to the church and to society - with that being said, this opportunity needs to be a stiff penalty with serious ramifications. I am not a follower of any sort of organized religion/fairytale organization, but to steal from an institution that does a great deal of good for the community is atrocious.

~She worked at another center before this one.
.
~Her boss thought she may be steeling.
.
~She was fired for somethign different before it was proved.
.
~she got a job at this center.
.
~She stole and got caught.
.
~she got arrested and had a hearing.
.
~At the hearing when the judge said would anyone like to talk the past that was at Faith when she was did stand up and talk. The judge was moved by what he had to say.
.
~the judge then said that he wanted an investigation to the center she had worked at to make sure she didnt steel. If she did she will have to pay back all money.
WAS THAT OK FOR YOU!?

I should add that she was found guilty of it as this center but the paster at this church spoke at her hearing and moved the judge and the judge is looking in to her past now to make sure everthing she stole is paied back.
The center she worked at before this thought she may have stole but it was after she was fired for something else.

I have resisted commenting before now, but I think it's important to consider some other facts:
* Surely this woman was supervised by *someone*. Why didn't that someone or those "someones" catch this activity before it got this bad?
* All of the reports I have read indicate that the elders of the church *never* attempted to resolve the issue within the church. Instead, they went right to the cops. Read 1 Corinthians 6, which addresses the issue directly. Christians are to deal with one another within the confines of the church.
* Before condemning this woman, I would encourage each of you to count your own bad behaviors. Have you ever cheated on your tax returns? Ever received too much change from a cashier? These are only two examples of ways we are thieves. How is it, then, that we can judge this woman?
* "The Young FORMER Pastor" needs to reread his theology books once again. He has used such vitriolic, condemnatory language that he serves as an embarrassment to the church. He is a Lutheran who does not live out the teachings of Luther, who centered his life, ministry, writing and teaching on the concepts of grace and mercy.
"Do not judge, so that you may not be judged. For with the judgment you make you will be judged" (Matthew 7:1-2a). I'll leave it there for now.

Id also like to add that even though she always got paid for 40 hours I know many people who can attest that she RARELY worked 40 hours a week.

What she used the money for is irrelevant. It is an insult to anyone who came from poverty or near poverty to imply a connection between crime and income. They are not connected. Crime is a result of character flaws and the often neglected concept of sin.

biggirl- Im sorry in a more christian like manor please-we are talking $50K from a daycare-the best in town, and church afiliated. I agree with McDaddy completly- thank you! There is no choice but have the police get involved to make sure that things are handled profesionaly. From personal dealings, she was fake, lied, and underminded her staff, family, and communitys. I have every faith in the new director as she was commited to the center for many years and has done an outstanding job, truly holding 2 jobs for years! I also feel horrible for her husband that made a living and could support her- Greed, Alcohol and selfishness truly take over. As for Rock County, I do not agree with her being able to go as she pleases out of state and that is where Rock county again has failed the community. They let child abusers do as they please, and stealers to go on trips-shame on Rock ounty again!

Hmm, I would not have expected the police to be called the time that my church coffeehouse ran out of steam and I was the one with the cash box at home -- about $75 -- for several months. I just forgot about it. But consciously stealing $50,000 is something else.
.
I have to say it again. Giving someone access to money is as big a responsibility as the person is taking on. It may be only 1% who are susceptible to temptation but if nobody is checking up that person is going to end up robbing the place blind.

biggirl- i am a christian, but i believe the courts and police do need to get involved. If she had come forward before this came to light, maybe then she deserves a little mercy, but she didn't. The church had to pay more money to investigate missing money. Ironic. just to find out the person they put in charge and trusted was stealing from them. That warrants charges and i hope the DA prosecutes to the fullest extent of the law. Not for her sake, but so others don't get an ideas about taking some money and pleading for mercy.

biggirl-Do you have one lick of common sense in your brain? What do you want to do, keep this under the radar so she can move on to her next victim? This is $50,000, not the petty cash account. Give her a fair trial and if she is guilty a stiff sentence. She is a criminal.

Mercy? Are you kidding? Stealing is stealing... whether it be $10, $50,000, or $60 billion. Why should the church help her? Stealing is dishonest, wrong, and against the law. A more christian manner? OK... take her out back and whip her a few times for her sins?... chop off a hand like they do in China? A crime is a crime and should be handled in the manner appropriated by the law. Would the opinion be different if she had embezzeled from the local 7/11? Would you say it should be handled in a Chrisian manner? Should we allow Bernard Madoff to pay the money back over time. IMO, no... everyone needs to be treated equally... you do the crime, you do the time.
