Monroe, Edgewood boys advance to sectional finals

Mitch Tordoff was up to his old tricks Thursday night for Monroe High School’s boys basketball team.

The senior sharpshooter scored 30 points, including a perfect 14-for-14 from the free-throw line, to lead the Cheesemakers to a 69-58 win over Wisconsin Dells in a WIAA Division 2 sectional semifinal game at Waunakee.

Monroe (17-7) plays Badger Conference rival Madison Edgewood (19-4) in the sectional title game at 6 p.m. Saturday at Sun Prairie. The two teams shared the Badger South title, but the Cheesemakers won both regular season meetings and are looking for their third straight trip to the state tournament.

Wisconsin Dells (19-5) took the lead over Monroe early in the second quarter and stayed on top until the final period. The Chiefs led 46-41 after three quarters, but were outscored 28-12 in the last eight minutes.

Tordoff scored 17 in the fourth quarter, including all 12 of his free-throw attempts.

Michael Barrett added 13 points for the Cheesemakers, while Tordoff’s younger brother, Bryan, scored in 12.

Jade Royston, whose half-court shot give Wisconsin Dells a 59-56 win over ninth-ranked River Valley in the regional finals, led the Chiefs with 19 points.

n Edgewood 63, Catholic Memorial 48—Derek Braucht scored 25 points, including 11 in the third quarter, to lead the Badger Conference South co-champions to the WIAA Division 2 sectional semifinal win at Janesville Parker.

Edgewood (18-4) will play Badger Conference South co-champion Monroe (17-7) in Saturday night’s sectional final game at Sun Prairie. Monroe won both regular-season games between the two teams.

Edgewood and Catholic Memorial (16-7) were tied 10-10 after one quarter, but a 19-8 advantage in the second quarter gave Edgewood a 29-18 halftime lead. Catholic Memorial got no closer than nine the second half.
